Abstract

The purpose of this work was to determine the environmental fragility of a segment of the Geoeconomic Region of the
Middle Mogi (SP) using the multiple-criteria evaluation technique provided in the GIS Idrisi 32®. The environmental
fragility map generated on a scale of 1:50,000 showed a predominance of areas classified as having a low to medium risk
of erosion. The very low fragility class reflects a conservationist land use, albeit of little influence due to the small area
involved. The strongest influence comes from the geological material represented by the Serra Geral Formation, the
mapping units with Red Latosol, and the areas with physiognomies of cerrado, forest and pastureland. The areas
containing natural vegetation are restricted and sparse, so the occurrence of Red Latosol is the determining factor in the
percentile contribution of the very low fragility class. The very high fragility class presents a low spatial share, influenced
by the occurrence of declivities with a higher degree of influence on erosive processes, alluvial plains, Neosol mapping
units and by the existence of exposed soils, urban areas and mining. The influence of forms of land use and occupation
that would condition a potentially high environmental fragility is minimized by the occurrence of factors such as
declivities with a lower degree of influence on erosive processes, permeable soils and mild relief shapes, resulting in a
classification of medium environmental fragility.
