Comparative Analysis of The Ephesiacas, by Xenophon of Ephesus, and A viuvinha, by José De Alencar

This article presents a comparative analysis of the works As Ephesiacas by Xenophon of Ephesus, and A Viuvinha, by José de Alencar, in order to describe the similarities and differences between both, establishing relationships between the “Greek novel” and the modern novel. The analysis was divided into three subtopics that deal with: forms of falling in love, apparent death and scenes of recognition. It was apparent that A Viuvinha presents characteristics found in the old novel, yet some elements are updated according to the 19th-century context, allowing us to think of Alencar’s novel as heir to a long literary tradition that is renewed and updated over time.
