Functionalist Translation of the Simple Past, Present Perfect, and Past Imperfect from Spanish to Portuguese

In this article, we address the translation of the Spanish past tenses Simple Past (SP), Present Perfect (PP), and Past Imperfect (PI) into Portuguese, using the theoretical framework of Functionalist Translation, Linguistic Functionalism, and the Didactic Sequence (DS) methodology. We applied the didactic sequence methodology to translating a biography, representing the Andean linguistic zone (characterized by a generalized use of the PP), to a group of Portuguese-speaking students learning Spanish. After their first contact with the biography, the students proceeded with the first translation; this was followed by modules on the students' difficulties with the temporal, aspectual and modal (TAM) values of the past tenses under analysis. Finally, the second translation took place. The translation data was compared in order to show that the knowledge acquired about the TAM verbal categories during the DS enabled the students to overcome difficulties in translating these tenses, making the target text more functional in terms of the linguistic uses examined. Furthermore, we observed that students' use of the SP and PI was conditioned by the presence of temporal modifiers, while the use of the PP occurred mainly in their absence, besides the predominance of the SP in Brazilian Portuguese. Additionally, students initially associated the SP and PP with telic events, though they could also evolve to atelic interpretations; the PI showed the opposite tendency, with habitual readings offering greater flexibility. Finally, the SP and PI tended to take on modal values of realis, while the PP was associated with irrealis. Finally, we would like to highlight the importance of applying a DS through the lens of functionalist translation, since, based on the contrast between the first and last productions, we were able to verify that there was significant progress in terms of the students' knowledge of the uses and values of the verbal categories tense, aspect and modality in the contexts of PPS, PPC and PII in Brazilian Portuguese and Andean Spanish.
