The importance of Saussure’s thoughts and Chomsky’s theory for Modern Linguistics

This article discusses the importance of Saussure’s thoughts and Chomsky’s linguistic theory, as from a bibliographical approach of their proposals concerning language. The objects of analysis are: a) the fundamental points in the ideas of Saussure, presented in the book “Curso de Linguística Geral” [Course in General Linguistics] (2006 [1916]), by his students; b) Chomsky’s delimitations concerning language, which have been altered with the passing of time and have resulted in studies that contribute to the understanding of the syntactic organization of languages. The revisiting carried out in this project, aims at giving a theoretical explanation of the fundamental difference between Saussure’s thoughts and Chomsky’s theory, in order to demonstrate how both researchers approached language; apart from this, we would like to recall the importance of Chomsky’s proposals for the development of modern linguistic studies.Downloads
