Mapeamento semântico-sintático de haver/ter no presente + particípio: uma incursão pelos séculos XIII, XIV e XV

Abstract

Focusing on Historical Linguistics, we investigated evidence of grammaticalization of haver/ter in the present + participle in texts from the 13th to 15th centuries, available in Corpus Informatizado do Português Medieval database. To carry out a semantic-syntactic mapping of the construction, we analyzed the aspect-temporal meanings: past with present relevance or only past, which were articulated to the parameters: argument selection/meaning of the second argument; semantic combination between haver/ter and participle, in addition to the frequency of haver and ter. Haver and ter in the present + participle construction have been more linked to the past with present relevance, although there is a considerable number of occurrences that mean past tense, with haver most frequently used in 13th and 14h centuries whereas in de 15th century there is a slight tendency to ter. In terms of argument selection, there is a tendency to select an object of inalienable possession, which can be characterized as grammaticalization evidence, because the abstractization of the possessed object leads to the attenuation of the possession original meaning. There are also combinations with participles that contradict the possession original meaning (like ‘ter perdido’) which is another sign of grammaticalization, i.e., auxiliarization of haver/ter. Articulation among functions, century and semantic-syntactic parameters allowed a more vertical view to the perfect compound genesis in Portuguese, both in relation to the fixed form (ter + participle) and current meaning (past with present relevance).
