Abstract

This article provides some insights into the role of interactional expertise as a necessary component of the specialized translator’s competence. More specifically, it proposes that the interaction between translator and field specialist through deliberate practice-oriented activities (ERICSSON; CHARNESS, 1997) stimulates the production of target texts that are adequate to the expectations of their target discourse communities. Such a proposal builds on Collins and Evans’s (2007, 2010) model of expertise and on Scardamalia and Bereiter’s (1991) notion of writing as the transformation of existing knowledge. Some examples are provided to support the proposal and show the relevance of interactional expertise to a successful translation practice and to the design of deliberate practice-oriented tasks aimed at training and specializing translators.
