Abstract

Testamentum Porcelli is an anonymous Latin text believed to have been written in the 4th century AD. This article characterizes the Brazilian reading of this text as limited to the association of its language to the so-called vulgar Latin. After providing an outline of a translation into Portuguese, this article discusses key points from the extensive bibliography written on the theme, aiming to restore its relevance for Brazilian Classical Studies.

Adjunct professor at the Núcleo de Teoria Literária e Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa (NUCLIT) and at the Núcleo de Estudos Clássicos (NUCLA) of the Instituto de Letras e Linguística of the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (ILEEL-UFU). Ph.D. student in the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos Literários at the Faculdade de Ciências e Letras de Araraquara of the Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (PPGELi/ FCLAr-UNESP).
