This paper presents findings of an exploratory study into the correlation between literal and metaphorical uses of the verb ‘construir’ (build) and the pattern [verb + (determiner) + noun + adjective], in which the adjective gives different directions. Based on the tenets of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Construction Grammar, occurrences of the target item in the Brazilian Corpus were annotated for metaphoricity and resultativeness of the adjective in use. It is argued that the correlation patterns can be analysed in terms of causative and resultative constructions or resultatives only. Cases where the literal use of ‘construir’ (build) is followed by a resultative adjective were not found, and this match was judged impossible in Brazilian Portuguese. A case is made for further complementary studies into the interplay between constructions and metaphors.
