Verbal and visual language in an excerpt of Ms. Marvel, Volume 1: No normal and its translations to Brazilian and European Portuguese

This article aims to investigate verbal and non-verbal language in an excerpt from Ms. Marvel, Volume 1: No Normal and in two of its translations, one to Brazilian Portuguese and the other one to European Portuguese. To do so, we use Translational Stylistics, Intermodal Translation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Visual Design Grammar, and Colour Studies, in accordance to the interpersonal metafunction. We used a five-tabbed spreadsheet. The first three tabs encompass the use of verbal language in the categories: Offer, Demand, Information, Goods and Services, Modalisation, and Modulation. The forth tab encompasses non-verbal language in the categories: Offer, Demand, and Basic Colour Terms. The fifth tab is also concerned with non-verbal language, and identifies the most frequent Basic Colour Terms found in the selected panels. In the first four tabs, the categories marked as “yes” through a Microsoft Excel function were later quantified. However, for the fifth tab, the quantification was carried out manually. The results show that the source text and target texts are identical when it comes to the verbal language categories. The results also show that, for non-verbal language, Offer is more frequent than Demand, which matches the results for verbal language. We can conclude that, for verbal language, the differences between the source text and the target texts are micro-textual. We could observe a consonance between the verbal and visual semiotic modes in the selected excerpt.
