The present work presents a study about variations in the use of the article in Portuguese L2 by Chinese L1 speakers, with the aim to test the Syntactic Misanalysis Account (SMA) in the representation of the article in L2 grammars. Proposed by Trenkic (2007, 2008), this hypothesis predicts that the choice of articles will be influenced by the objective identifiability of the referents and treated as procedural adjectives. The focus of the study is on the tendency of Chinese learners to more easily omit Portuguese articles in the construction of nouns modified by the adjective (Art+N+Adj) than nouns without any modifier (Art+N). The data collected from the written and oral production in Portuguese L2 of Chinese learners show that the SMA serves to explain the variations detected in the use of the article in Portuguese L2 by Chinese L1 speakers.Downloads
