This paper aims at studying shifts in translations which represent the translators’ dialogic positioning towards values expressed in texts as well as their interaction with a putative readership. This topic is discussed based on an interface of theories and methods used in Rosa (2009) and Munday (2012, 2015) in order to investigate the role of the interpersonal function in translator-reader interaction and translator’s intervention, respectively. Shifts in the communicative structure of narrative are studied with a focus on the ones involving characters’ speech presentation and the ones involving the use of evaluation resources in translations of picture books from English into Brazilian Portuguese. The paper ultimately aims at identifying the translators’ dialogic positioning towards the values expressed in these texts through the use of evaluative resources and the construction of a community of shared values amongst their readers.Downloads
