Abstract

The current study aims at describing the thematic structure of Audiovisual Research Articles (ARA) from the field of biology published on the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) beginning with the Textual Metafunction (HALLIDAY, 1985; 1994; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2014). The steps of the analysis were: transcription of oral language, identification of Thematic structure and Thematic patterns based on Halliday (1985, 1994) and Halliday and Matthiessen (2004, 2014) and Thompson (2004). Results showed a preference for Processes and Circumstances thematization, a low occurrence of Textual Themes and an almost inexistence of Interpersonal Themes as well. It was concluded that the Textual Metafunction contributes to the instructional nature of the ARA corroborating previous studies (SOUZA, 2015; SILVA, 2015a, 2015b; MILANI, 2014).
