Use of prepositional conclusive connectors in different textual genres
from blogs to ENEM composition

This study focuses on prepositional connectors that fill the scheme [Segment 1 CONNECTOR Segment 2] <-> Conclusion. Some of these connectors are recognized by traditional grammar (Cegalla, 2008; Rocha Lima, 2011; Cunha; Cintra, 2017), such as por isso, portanto and por conseguinte. Others, although very frequent, are not typically part of this list. This is the case of the connectors licensed by [Preposition Demonstrative Noun], such as dessa forma, desse modo, dessa maneira and nesse sentido. During data collection, it was found that some connectors fit into two similar schemes, considered as variants. The first is [Preposition Demonstrative], with connectors like com isso and diante disso. It is important to note that this scheme also includes the previously mentioned por isso. The second is [Preposition Noun Preposition Demonstrative], as seen in em/por consequência disso, em decorrência disso and em vista disso. Therefore, this paper focuses on the three connectors mentioned by traditional grammar, as well as those represented by the schemes outlined before, which are combinations of preposition, demonstrative and, in some cases, noun. Based on previous studies (Biber et al., 1999; Liu, 2008), it is assumed that the textual genre is one of the factors influencing the recurrence of these terms. Thus, the sample comprises two textual genres: one more formal, which is the ENEM composition, and the other less formal, texts published in blogs. The texts, collected from the internet, were produced over a ten-year period, from 2014 to 2023. The research is based on the constructionist perspective, that views language as a network of connections between form and function (Croft, 2001; Goldberg, 2006; Traugott; Trousdale, 2013; Diessel, 2015). The statistical analysis was conducted with the help of GoldVarbX program (Sankoff; Tagliamonte; Smith, 2005), and the results found indicate that the textual genre plays a significant role in the choice and frequency of prepositional conclusive connectors.
