Abstract
In 1996, the Resources Center for the Visually Impaired (Presidente Prudente, SP) has completed 10 years of existence. Visually impaired children and teenagers have been benefited by the application of tactile learning aids devised through the Research Project entitled "Tactile Cartography and the teaching of Geography", sponsored by the Brazilian Research Council (CNPq) and carried out since 1993 by a team of researchers and students at FCT/UNESP.
The aim of this paper is to present some of the activities which have been carried out by the team towards the production and application of tactile learning aids for visually impaired students, taking books and maps as sources of data. Three-dimensional models of geographical locations were built and quality control was conducted by visually impaired collaborators. The next step is to introduce hypermedia systems into the learning process as well as to disseminate such material through the Internet.
