Abstract
Comemoramos, hoje, o primeiro centenário da Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação. Não poderíamos fazê-lo sem evocarmos, com reverência e orgulho cívico, as várias gerações que nos precederam e que, com dedicação e entusiasmo, ao serviço da Hidrografia, legaram à Marinha a DHN atual, prestigiada e respeitada no País e no exterior.
O retrospecto das dificuldades vencidas, na fase anterior à fundação da Repartição Hidrográfica, ressalta a figura impar do nosso Patrono — o Capitão-de-Fragata Manoel Antonio Vital de Oliveira, realizador da primeira campanha hidrográfica de grande envergadura, quando, ainda Primeiro-Tenente, comandando um pequeno navio de velas, o late "Parahybano", levantou, no período de 1857 a 1859, o trecho da costa brasileira compreendido entre a foz do rio Mossoró e a foz do rio São Francisco.
