Abstract

With the expansion of urban areas in the world, studies are being conducted to analyze adjacent areas influenced by urban areas and influenced areas are called peri-urban. In addition, the few works carried out on the subject in the global south, as peri-urban areas have different characteristics even among regions of Brazil, making it difficult to create methodologies for identifying peri-urban areas. Therefore, the present work sought to contribute to the understanding of the definitions of peri-urban areas in Amazonian municipalities and to elaborate a methodology for their identification. Periurban areas were identified using data and spatial analysis tools. To replicate the method, open data and software were used. The materials used consist of matrix and vector data treated in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and free platforms for image processing. The method was applied to two Amazonian municipalities in Brazil, Santarém (Pará) and Cametá (Pará). These were chosen to evaluate the delimitation in municipalities with different characteristics and the flexibility of the elaborated method. The result was compared to another method of delimitation of peri-urban areas in Amazonian municipalities and estimations of the delimitations were carried out. We sought to analyze whether the proposed periurban was able to consider areas and occupations characteristic of the Amazon region. To analyze comparing the proposed peri-urban area with a reference peri-urban area, spatial data on human occupations and services, demographic data and satellite images were used. The article ends with considerations about the proposed method, its contributions and analyzes that can be done in future works.
