Abstract

This paper provides a description of the multifunctionality of aun/aún and todavía in peninsular Spanish. To do so, the investigation mapps functional and formal properties in order to distinguish different uses of aun/aún and todavía within the Spanish language grammar system. As material for analysis, it is used the database of PRESEEA project (Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish from Spain and America), focusing on data from Spanish cities. As a framework, it is followed Functional Discourse Grammar model (Hengeveld; Mackenzie, 2008). The results point out four distinct uses of aun/aún and todavía in peninsular Spanish: fasal, polar, emphatic and expansive.

Michel Gustavo Fontes, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul

É graduado em Letras (Licenciatura, com habilitação em Português e Espanhol), Mestre e Doutor em Estudos Linguísticos pela Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), câmpus de São José do Rio Preto. É Professor Adjunto da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), câmpus de Três Lagoas (CPTL), onde atua, na graduação, junto às disciplinas da área de língua espanhola e, na pós-graduação, junto à linha de pesquisa de Análise e Descrição de Línguas. Tem experiência na área de Teoria e Análise Linguística, especialmente na linha de descrição funcional de línguas, trabalhando com temas como: distinção léxico/gramática, mudança linguística, ordenação de constituintes e articulação de orações.
