Abstract

The Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste establishes Portuguese and Tetum as official languages, while acknowledging English and Indonesian as working languages and endorsing the study and preservation of the various national languages. By examining one fragment of Dili’s linguistic landscape, the capital city, this study offers a perspective on the representation and distribution of the various languages in that landscape, as well as some notes on language policy, its purpose being to ascertain whether some languages are dominant over the others, to check the visibility of national languages and to find out if there is room for further languages other than national, official and working languages. The results now obtained are also compared with those presented by other studies on the same subject, concerning that same context.
