Categorical selection patterns resulting from the practice of interlingual translation by undergraduate students in Mozambique

This article aims to describe the categorical selection patterns resulting from interlingual translation practice of undergraduate students in Mozambique. Methodologically, it takes as basis a corpus made up of 114 sentences produced by 40 students of the English/Portuguese Translation Program at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. Results of this study show that the interlingual translation process poses linguistic adequacy-related difficulties to the informants. One of the areas of Portuguese grammar which is problematic in the translation process is the establishment of the categorical selection properties of lexical items at the level of prepositional, nominal and phrasal arguments.
