Abstract

This work describes the didactic and pedagogical activities taken by a multilingual group of students learning Portuguese as an additional language (henceforth PAL). Our main goal is to help PAL teachers develop activities and dynamic tasks, where it is possible to reach the needs of students from different languages and social contexts. The study involves learners of diverse nationalities who are being exposed to Portuguese as a foreign language in an academic and social context. In particular, it is described the didactic practices that were conducted with a basic level class of an intensive PAL course offered by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), as well as the data obtained through a questionnaire applied at the end of the course. The results suggest that activities and exchange of personal experiences within small groups encourage students' autonomy and confidence, thus helping them to overcome challenges in learning Portuguese as a foreign language, as well as cultural adaptation.
