We come to analyse a text until now forgotten in the history of linguistic ideas in Brazil, Júlio Ribeiro’s Traços Geraes de Linguistica (1880), significantly, the first work of linguistics produced in the country. We present Júlio Ribeiro as an author of linguistics aware of the issues of his time, who deals with themes such as the seat of articulated language, the apparatus of phonation, the origin, evolution and typology of languages and the history of language sciences, retaking and innovating the questions of historical grammar; and also as a historian of the language sciences, who presents particular interpretations of the history of Linguistics. We have shown that, by this gesture of reformulating linguistic theories and their history, Júlio Ribeiro inserts Portuguese language and Brazilian indigenous languages in the general questions of the scientific knowledge on language in the 19th century.Downloads
