Revisit the micro and macro translation units in the procedural and pragmatic approach of translation research

The present study examines the importance of the procedural translation unit. It revises the notion of micro and macro translation units (ALVES; VALE, 2009; 2011) by using application MicroUnitsAPP to explore the importance of context in translation from a pragmatic translation approach (GUTT; 2000). Building on data of one single participant, P3, as collected through Translog-II by Minatogau (2018), a manual analysis was carried out of the distribution of translation units, especially their distribution in micro and macro translation units. A total of 96 micro translation units was identified, out of which 70 belonged to one single macro translation unit. After this macro translation unit, P3’s text production became faster and more linear, pointing to the importance of context in translation tasks. This seems to show that the analysis of translation units still presents a distinct feature in comparison to the entire translation process, especially from a pragmatic approach. This may also explain the distribution of cognitive effort in the reconstruction of the source text’s context for translation and point to the need to formulate a procedural translation unit editor.
