Abstract

The objective of this text is to compare the motivations for the choice of names of people in two university communities: one located in the Faculty of Higher Studies Acatlán (UNAM), in the State of Mexico, applied to a sample of students from different Humanities degrees offered in that faculty, with another constituted by the Law degree of the Unioeste, offered at the Marechal Cândido Rondon campus, in Brazil, with the psychological definition of motivation by Heckhausen and Heckhausen (2018) as its theoretical foundation, as well as the most recent studies of comparative anthroponomastics (López Franco, 2014 a and b, Seide, 2020a, Fernández & Seide, 2021) among others. Data were generated using a questionnaire to elicit narratives about name choice in both communities. The data analysis was conducted in three stages: in the first, the Mexican data were analyzed and categorized; in the second, using the same methodology, the Brazilian data were analyzed; in the third, both narrative corpora were compared. The results showed that the two communities have more similarities than differences in their motivations for choosing a name. There were very similar motivations for the choice of the name in Mexico and Brazil: three most frequent motives for attribution in the narratives of the name collected in the UNIOESTE Rondon and in the FES Acatlán are the taste of the name giver, intergenerational transmission, and, in Mexico, the homage to a beloved bearer, while, in Brazil, the influence of the mass media. However, there was an interesting difference in the way the name is evaluated: while in Mexico euphony is more valued, that is, how a name sounds, in Brazil how the name looks in its written form is valued more. Regarding the choice for religious reasons, the data pointed to some convergences: in both countries, the religious factor is still present, despite the fact that a high proportion of Mexican students have declared themselves non-religious. In Brazil, religious motivation competes with choice guided by the meaning of the name, a macro category that was not broken down in sufficient detail in this contribution. The importance of Catholic Christian culture in both countries is evident, however.
