To contribute to the history of the relationship between friendship, childhood, and education – a matter so dear to our present time – this article seeks to analyse the veridiction consistency of friendship as a child and educational relationship in the thought of Comenius (Jan Amos Komenský). To this end, the article is organized as follows: (1) description and articulation of the notions of human nature, childhood, and education in the Comenius’ didactic work; (2) description and analysis of the notion of friendship and the figure of the friend in Comenius’ didactic work, based on the uses of the words “amicitial” and “amicus”; (3) analysis of the conditions of truthfulness regarding friendship, childhood, and education, in order to indicate the possibility or impossibility of friendship as a childhood relationship and/or as an educational relationship in Comenius’ thought. For the analysis of Comenius’ didactic work, the compilation of his didactic texts in Latin, published under the name Opera Didactia Omnia (“Complete Didactic Work”), divided into four volumes, was used. The article concludes that, given the primacy of reason in Comenius’ conception of human being, the importance of person formation, and the character of the child's incompleteness: (1) the superficiality of friendship for the author, except when treated in the terms of civility; (2) the impossibility of friendship among children; (3) the exteriority of the figure of the friend and the friendship in relation to didactics and school.
