Abstract

This study is about the “innocent realism” developed by Susan Haack, that she herself attributes to Scotus and Peirce. Firstly, we made some considerations about the possibility of metaphysics and developed an opposition between a “metaphysics of the necessary” (Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Hegel) and a “metaphysics of the plausible” (Reid, Peirce, Popper, Haack). We also sought to articulate Susan Haack's broader view of “science” with the idea of a metaphysics of the plausible. Next, we presented her “innocent realism” and made some criticisms and reformulations: a) we refined the concept of fictitious in order to clarify how it differs from “real”, “natural’, and “existent”; b) we reformulated the concept of object in foundherentist terms, in such a way that we could reconcile the best of “conceptual relativism” and “foundherentism” without falling, as we believe, into a relativism.
