Abstract

This review emphasizes the importance of the translation of the collection of aphorisms Crepúsculo (Dämmerung), written between 1926 and 1931, in promoting discussion about Max Horkheimer's thought in Brazil. In this collection of brief notes, reflections on everyday life are combined with judgements on philosophical thought and politics. Publishing the notes only in 1934 and under a pseudonym, Horkheimer displays a rare openness about his conception of Marxism and mirrors the contradictions of his time. Given the abundance of possible paths opened by the non-systematic nature of these aphorisms, this review addresses, in a non-exhaustive way, points of continuity in relation to his essays published in the 1930s, grouping and bringing together the discussion on themes such as morality, compassion, metaphysics, religion, among others.
