Reflections on the Kantian notion of experience based on Walter Benjamin and its impacts on education

Abstract: The article aims to revisit some of Walter Benjamin’s statements regarding the Kantian notion of experience, based on the 1917 essay, On the Program of a Coming Philosophy in order to discuss his education notion implied in the concept of experience and present throughout the author’s work. The Kantian critical project, which initially aimed to delimit the extent of sensitive knowledge, is conceived as a science of the limits of reason, redefining the forms and limits of sensitivity. Benjamin recognizes that Kant took philosophy to a new point of no return that characterized the birth of a new notion of experience, however, based on Kant’s commitment to Enlightenment and the assumptions of scientific knowledge and Newtonian physics, this notion remained latent. The limits of the Kantian notion unfold in the later philosophy and neo-Kantianism of the Marburg School. The Benjamin’s essay is to show that criticism poses the possibility of elaborating a much richer concept of experience, in the sense of a theory of knowledge that encompasses the understanding of history, religion, language and art, as an effective expression of philosophy. The essay opens a discussion that covers Benjamin's other writings on the loss of experience, an event that is linked to a historical process of formation of modernity and unfolds in reflections on language.
