Abstract

In the last decade, Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) has settled as a flexible and efficient approach
for automatic land cover/land use classification of urban areas. Nevertheless, it is only available on image interpretation
software of broad and complex conceptual basis. Hence, information extraction with such tools can be a detailed and
time-consuming task. Aiming to contribute with a faster and less complex methodology for information extraction,
this work proposes a method for extracting roofs made of different tile types present in Brazilian cities. The basic idea
of the method is to propose band ratio index that facilitate the distinction of different roof types on high resolution
imagery. Spectral profiles of six different tile types were collected in laboratory utilizing the Fieldspec FR II
espectroradiometer. Results are discussed qualitatively in terms of sample distinction and possible component materials.
Following, the spectral profiles were re-sampled to the position and bandwith of sensors IKONOS, QuickBird, GeoEyeI and WordView-II. Lastly, a specific technique for ceramic tile roofs detection from QuichBird imagery is shown.
