Reflections on toponymic taxonomy

from the point of arrival to the point of departure

Abstract

Traditionally,toponomastic studies have always been based on the theory created by Maria Vicentina do Amaral Dick proposed in the early 1990s and later expanded by Aparecida Negri Isquerdo in 1996. The taxonomy proposed by Dick (1992) considers the characteristics of the toponyms under analysis and categorizes them into toponymic taxes, these being subdivided into anthropocultural or physical motivations. However due to the complexity, dynamicity and singularity of naming a place, new methodologies for toponymic analysis in line with existing taxes should be considered, in order to broaden the reflections in the scope of toponomastic studies. In this perspective, this study proposes to reflect on the taxonomic approach to toponyms. For this purpose a clipping of the master's thesis "The comercial names of Naranjal-Paraguay" will be presented, in which Lucas (2019) studied the names of the commercial establishments of the Paraguayan city starting from toponymy taxonomy for other areas of language studies. The results obtained evidenced that the analysis of toponymic  taxonomies reconciled with other areas of linguistic studies allows the researcher to make reflections that transcend the field of toponymic motivations and contribute significantly to the history, culture and linguistic and cultural memory of the community investigated.
