Abstract

In this paper we intend to establish an historical development of a special class of pedagogical lexicography, namely, learner’s lexicography. Learner’s dictionaries are specially designed as a support to foreign language-learning. We aim to present not only an historical panorama of this subject, but also we are especially interested in exploring which knowledge areas could help to improve learner’s dictionaries. As a methodological framework, we use principles of metalexicography, such the fact that every piece of information contained in a dictionary must corres-pond to the language in use. A second metalexicographical principle is that the user must profit from the lexicographical information in order to use the language. Subsequently, both principles are tested together in the light of disciplines as corpus linguistics, error analysis and cognition; furthermore, we analyze these principles with the aid of data obtained from learner’s corpora (in particular, errors performed by foreign-language students). Our results prove that all these areas offer a very useful knowledge for the design of English learners’ diction-naries and Spanish learners’ dictionaries. We can conclude that the learner’s lexicography must be an essentially interdisciplinary area.
