Abstract

The primary concern of this research is to investigate a phonological feature in Portuguese as Heritage Language (PHL) learning, in Brazilian variety. The focus of this study will be on examining whether a heritage speaker, when learning the language in a mature age, pronounces phonetic/phonological traits recovering them from the language variety which he/she was exposed to in the early childhood. We founded this research in Cummings (1983) deploying his Heritage Language concept; Doi (2006), Flores & Melo-Pfeifer (2014), and Spinassé (2006) in order to approach and distinguish Mother Tongue, Second Language, and Foreign Language concepts; also Miranda (2012) who performed an acoustic analysis comparing Brazilian Portuguese and American English vowels. The data were collected through online forms and interviews applied to Portuguese Heritage Speakers speakers who fit in these backgrounds: Brazilian’s grown children who were born abroad and had learned Portuguese in early childhood, in a non-immersion environment. The found data reveal the speakers dialectal variation is consistent to the one they were exposed to in early childhood, and also is distinct from the one used by their professors whom they had formal instruction. These phonetic/phonological features performed in the speaker’s production support our thesis: there is a phonetic/phonological procedural memory acting acquired in early childhood.
