Archaeogenealogy of a news story about Palmeirópolis, TO

Abstract

This article aims to examine the relations of knowledge-power embedded in the news piece titled “Civic Parade with Children in Southern Tocantins Involves Alleged Racist Act, Authorities Call for Investigation”, published on November 18, 2024, by the online journal Gazeta do Cerrado. To carry out this analytical endeavor, the well-established archaeogenealogical method of Discourse Analysis, inspired by Foucault, is employed, using some of its key operational concepts: discursive formation, statement, apparatus, and episteme. This study develops an archaeogenealogical analysis of the enunciative materiality of news, identifying discursive networks and their knowledge-power effects within the media apparatus. Through this methodological approach, it becomes possible to reveal the depth and effects of a disciplinary power sustained by a normative knowledge that legitimizes certain pedagogical practices naturalized within formal education. When interpellated by conservative discourses, such practices tend to be subjected to the regulatory scrutiny of both the juridical and media apparatuses. One of the key findings of this analysis is the careful examination of the statement and its conditions of production, showing how the news piece is configured as a politically oriented set of meanings shaped by a progressive discursive formation underpinning the media apparatus of Gazeta do Cerrado. This discursive arrangement enabled the apprehension of an interventionist episteme, characterized by a rationality that seeks to reposition the school and its subjects in the face of symbolic and structural forms of racial exclusion, through the exposure of inequalities and the proposition of institutional mechanisms of accountability.
