Abstract

This article aims to analyze freedom as a philosophical category in historical-dialectical materialism. It is based on the assumption that materialist freedom is opposed to abstract freedom, which derives from the liberal conception of the world. Firstly, the article discusses the role of freedom in historical-dialectical materialism and highlights the main controversies surrounding this category. It highlights the indispensability of the works Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 and The Ontology of Social Beingfor the study of freedom from the ontological-genetic perspective. In the second moment, it investigates and exposes the category of freedom from materialist ontology. It highlights the relationship between materialist freedom and work, especially understood as an activity that produces use value. In effect, it analyzes the immanence of freedom with necessity and highlights its relationship with the development of the human race. It concludes by the need to understand the category of freedom under the implications of class society, that is, under the determinations of work as an activity that produces exchange value.
