Sculpture as Absolute Metaphor in Agostinho da Silva with a note on the German translation of the Seven Letters to a Young Philosopher

Abstract: One of the features of Agostinho da Silva’s writings in the range of the Seven Letters to a Young Philosopher of 1945 is a continual use of sculpture as a metaphor for the process of human formation. The predominant educational impetus of his writing and pedagogical activity in the 1930s and 1940s is strongly influenced by his engagement with ancient Greek culture, so that almost all of his texts during this period draw in some way on certain educational ideals of antiquity. Sculpture thereby becomes an absolute metaphor for education in general and at the same time merges with a Christian connotated interpretation of the individual's willingness to sacrifice in the service of a coming humanity. However, ancient and Christian aspects of education are not simply reproduced in Agostinho da Silva's work, but are influenced by the latest pedagogical movements, such as the Montessori method or the concept of rural educational homes (Landerziehungsheime) in the sense of Hermann Lietz. This article traces these connections and influences and places them in the context of Agostinho da Silva's early major work, the Seven Letters to a Young Philosopher, recently published in German translation by Friedenauer Presse in Berlin in autumn 2022.
