Abstract

The objective is to demonstrate in this text, part of a thesis, how geolinguistic studies, in particular the field of Pluridimensional and Contactual Geolinguistics (Altenhofen; Thun, 2016), complement field research data with data from specialized bibliographic research in the area. Cartography of different natures, such as thematic, demographic, linguistic and other cartography, ancient as well as contemporary, offer extremely important data to be researched. With access available to different databases, with emphasis on rare digitized material, such as ancient cartography that is difficult to access and read, it is possible to carry out contextualized and interdisciplinary studies that are centered here on the lexicon. The study revealed possible relationships between the toponym Maranhão and the hydronym Marañon, as a strategy for territorial expansion in the formation of the Brazilian cartographic space and, consequently, the domain of the Portuguese language.
