Abstract

In this article, preliminary results of the project Translation Competence and Translator Training: the development of translator specific subcompetences (CNPq 485158/2013-2) will be presented. The aim of the project is to carry out a longitudinal study with a group of translation students to investigate the development of the translation competence from a cognitive approach. Preliminary results – from the first and second phase of the project – on the development of the knowledge about translation subcompetence will be discussed here. Data on knowledge about translation were collected and analyzed drawing on PACTE (2008). These data were triangulated with data on the quality of the translations produced by the participants. Quality assessment was carried out based on PACTE’s (2011b) criteria and on the Translation Quality Assessment Tool developed by Colina (2008). Results point to a progress in the development of the participant’s knowledge about translation subcompetence during the period between the first and the second phase of data collection. We expect to confirm the research results obtained here with the completion of this ongoing project. Furthermore, we expect to broaden knowledge on translation competence acquisition and to foster discussions that lead to improvements in translation teaching.
