This paper has the purpose of commenting on the available literature about the structure of syllables in Esperanto, based on concepts of the phonological theory about the possible syllabic structuring in a wide range of languages. Firstly we will verify what can be said about the syllable, its structure and its constituents, in order to, afterwards, examine what has been written in Esperanto and about Esperanto on the subject. Finally, we formulate structural rules in accordance with the discussion in the paper. There are only a few studies related to the topic about Esperanto. Our main sources are articles by Oostendorp (1999) and Bavant (2006), who made a compilation of several books mentioning the notion of "syllable" and who try to define it, besides having analyzed, using a computer program, all the words (more than 47,000) that compose the PIV – Plena Ilustrita Vortaro (Complete Illustrated Dictionary), to find the possible constituents of the syllable and their frequency in the language.
