Abstract

Currently, there is no shortage of writings, debates and speeches on democracy. But more than arousing vigilance and expansion, current reflections highlight the deep crisis, discredit and attacks that are being launched against democracy in Brazil and around the world. This article presents the historical path, the theoretical concepts and the predominant configuration that democracy has acquired in the modern and contemporary world. Throughout the text, particular emphasis is placed on the contradictions and reasons that led to the emptying and its decline. But, at the same time, authors and political movements that have outlined another conception of democracy are redeemed, indicating challenges and possibilities for building a new civilization capable of socializing economic, political and cultural power on a planet to be treated as a common home.
