Vygotsky and the Critique of Potebnia’s Individualistic Subjectivism

This paper aims to analyze Vygotsky’s (1999) considerations in Psychology of Art regarding the aesthetics from above, characterized by a subjectivist and metaphysical foundation, focusing specifically on the influence of Humboldt and Potebnia on the subjectivist aesthetic perspective. We present Vygotsky’s views on the limitations of Potebnia’s theory concerning the aesthetic perspective centered on the artistic materiality that Vygotsky proposes in Psychology of Art. Vygotsky criticizes Potebnia’s subjectivist view, which excludes the role of artistic form, arguing that form and content are inseparable in the aesthetic reaction. We analyze Potebnia’s concept of allegory and its limitations from Vygotsky’s (1999) perspective, considering possible interpretations of Sophocles’ tragedy, Oedipus Rex.
