Abstract

This work is a critical review of the book The Palliative Society: Pain Today by philosopher Byung-Chul Han, published in Brazil in 2021. The book argues that algophobia, aversion to pain, predominates in contemporary society. The growing intolerance to suffering establishes in the subject an almost absolute state of anesthesia that ends up surrounding different areas of collective life, of what is called public space and citizenship. This attempt to get rid of suffering completely configures the rise of palliative democracy and fake news, the triumph of art and culture subordinated to the like of social media and the positive psychology that supports the subject of neoliberal performance.
