Entry structure proposal for the avifauna of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul vocabulary

Abstract

The Pantanal is an ecoregion that brings together an important contingent of birds, representing about 40% of the avifauna species in Brazil. Despite the region’s interest, the lack of scientific publications aimed at a target audience of researchers who are involved in studies on avifauna, represents a barrier to communication between communities of specialists and the people of the Pantanal. This work, part of an ongoing doctoral research, proposes a reflection on the conception of a specialized vocabulary entry, to allow communication between ornithologists, birds observers and the populations of the Pantanal sub-regions. The study starts from the observation of morpho-semantic disparities identified in the comparative analysis of avifauna taxa from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul in the different languages ​​available on the Avibase website (World avifauna database, 2021). The corpus of scientific nomenclature was obtained from the Brazilian Ornithology Registry (RBO, 2021) and complemented with photographic and linguistic data obtained through interviews with peoples of the Pantanal. The study is guided by the theoretical principles of Lexicography (REY-DEBOVE, 1971), Terminography (REY, 1979; KRIEGER; FINATTO, 2004; BARROS, 2004; FAULSTICH, 2010) and multilingual Terminology (THOIRON, 1994), which proposes the conception of the definition, with the semes of the denominations in the maximum of different languages. This proposal discusses an entry proposal whose definition offer scientific indications for the target audience for the observation of avifauna, while providing sociolinguistic, etymological, and encyclopedic data, that facilitate communication with the peoples of the Pantanal and better understanding of the object of study.
