Exploring mathematics in building App Inventor applications

Abstract

This report describes an innovative project at the intersection of digital technology and mathematics education implemented in the first year of high school at a State School in the interior of Minas Gerais. The project aimed to equip students with fundamental programming skills through the use of MIT App Inventor, with the aim of applying them to understanding quadratic equations and studying financial mathematics. The experience sought not only to introduce programming concepts in a didactic and accessible way, but also to demonstrate their practical applicability and reinforce mathematical content through the development of relevant applications. Preliminary results indicate a significant increase in student engagement and a better understanding of the mathematical concepts covered.

Author Biographies

João Vitor Souza Leal, Universidade Federal de Catalão

Born in Guarda-Mor/MG, I completed high school in 2022 at Escola Estadual Doutor Antônio Ribeiro. I am currently studying Mathematics at the Federal University of Catalão and am an active member of the Academic Mathematics Center.

Daniel da Silveira Guimarães, Universidade Federal de Catalão

He holds a degree in Mathematics from the Federal University of Goiás (2002), a master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Brasília (2005) and a PhD in Mathematics from the Federal University of São Carlos (2015). He was an adjunct professor and advisor at Consepe at the Federal University of Mato Grosso and an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Goiás. Currently at the Federal University of Catalão he is an associate professor, advisor at Consepec, coordinator of the Mathematics Degree course and vice-coordinator of the EAD Educational Robotics Specialization and its Technologies in Mathematics Teaching. He has experience in the area of ​​Mathematics and Mathematics Education, with an emphasis on Differential Geometry and Educational Robotics.

Fernando da Costa Barbosa, Universidade Federal de Catalão

Doctorate in Education (2016) in the Science and Mathematics Education line, Master's in Education (2011) in the Knowledge and Practices line, Specialization in Science Teaching (2010) and degree in Mathematics from the Federal University of Uberlândia (2007). He has experience in the area of  Mathematics, with an emphasis on MATHEMATICAL EDUCATION, working mainly with educational robotics. Effective professor at the Federal University of Catalão at the Institute of Mathematics and Technology, working as a teacher for inperson and distance learning Mathematics courses.
