Abstract
Sistema de Posicionamento Global (SPG), ou na língua de origem Global Positioning System (GPS), às vezes chamado NAVSTAR, é o nome de um projeto ora em desenvolvimento nos Estados Unidos com a participação da Força Aérea, da Marinha e do DMA (Defense Mapping Agency). Trata-se de um sistema de navegação através de satélites artificiais capaz de fornecer coordenadas tridimensionais bastante precisas bem como informação de tempo a usuários devidamente equipados em qualquer lugar sobre ou próximo da Terra. O sistema foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de substituir com vantagens o atual Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS) que já não atende a todos os usuários nem satisfaz o nível de precisão exigido.
