Abstract

This experience report focuses on an English language workshop carried out within the scope of the Institutional Program for Teaching Initiation Scholarships (Pibid) with high school students. This workshop aimed at expanding the students' lexical competence, in order to prepare them for the English language section of the Brazilian National High School Exam (Enem). Our theoretical and methodological guidelines were the Lexical Approach (LEWIS, 1993; 2000; 2008) and Corpus Linguistics, respectively. Among the results from the workshop are: (i) the increase of the target audience’s English language vocabulary; (ii) the promotion of confidence regarding reading English language texts; (iii) the training of novice teachers for research in linguistic analysis and description, as well as for pedagogical material production.
