Land use changes and agro-extractivist reconversion in the Semi-arid Region of Minas Gerais - Brazil: the Tapera Settlement and the Veredas Vivas Geraizeiro Territory

Combining data on changes in land use and occupation and field research, this article analyzes the restoration of biodiversity and water supply in the Alto Rio Pardo, in the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais, as a result of the replacement of monoculture areas by agro-extractive settlements. Focusing on the Tapera Settlement and the Veredas Vivas Agro-Extractivist Settlement Project, bibliographical research, analysis of satellite image classifications and field observations were carried out. The results indicate progress in the restoration of vegetation and water availability, as well as in the communities' ability to manage natural resources sustainably. The stabilization of anthropic uses and the partial regeneration of natural formations reinforce the viability of traditional production systems, which integrate production and conservation, and which are important for drawing up public policies for land regularization and sustainable management.
