Abstract

The present study aimed to characterize the spatial and temporal variability in water quality and quantity in the Ribeirão do Pico watershed in the municipality of Vargem in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Maps of relief, hydrography, and land use were generated using geoprocessing techniques. Water quality parameters were obtained using a HORIBA U-50 multiparameter probe. The study area was divided into six compartments based on altitude, each of which had flow monitoring at the main watercourse. From September 2016 to August 2019, 38 water samples were collected. The results indicated that native forests cover only 55% of the Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs), which contributed to increased levels of total dissolved solids, turbidity, and water temperature. The oscillation of pH, dissolved oxygen, and redox potential values suggests the presence of excess organic matter in the watercourse, likely associated with irregular land occupation in the APPs. Although the Ribeirão do Pico is classified as Class 1 water quality according to CONAMA Resolution No. 357/2005, this study identified critical areas requiring preservation and sustainable management.
