This study aimed to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and propose mitigating measures for a rice-producing and processing company in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Emissions were quantified based on emission factors by type of activity, encompassing direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2), and indirect emissions associated with the company’s activities (Scope 3). The total GHG emissions of the company amounted to 1,257.05 tCO2e, of which 63.3% were Scope 1, 0.4% were Scope 2, and 36.3% were Scope 3. The primary sources of emissions are related to cultivation and transportation after processing. The emission intensity was 13.5 tCO2e per cultivated hectare or 1.8 tCO2e per ton of rice produced. For processing, the carbon footprint was 3.2 kg CO2e per ton processed. The reduction in emissions will occur primarily with anticipation of soil tillage, flooding in cultivation and a decrease in the use of nitrogen fertilizers. These strategies are essential for the company to contribute to a low-carbon footprint, help reduce GHG emissions, and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
