Abstract

The production of beer in Brazil appears as one of the most important economic basis in industry, associated in several sectors. In this national context, we emphasize  the Southeast and South regions of brazilian terrritory as the principal core of beer production. Regarding the South region, the state of Rio Grande do Sul holds the highest numbers in companies in this sector. In the face of this situation, the main purpose of this article is analyze the brewery production of this state, since its beginnings in the XIX century until the second half of the XX century. The production of beer go through three periods:(1) the genesis, related to the German immigration in the beginning of the XIX century; (2) the expansion of production, therefore a transition in family culture production to industry logistics in the late XIX; and, lastly, (3) the decay in production with the inclusion of capital deriving from the Southeast region. Following analysis of data, the conclusion is that the production of beer in Rio Grande do Sul went from several phases and, even representing one of the major centers of industry production, holds its own challenges on thinking this sector within the next few years.
