Regular physical activity (PA) is associated with numerous health benefits, particularly with regard to disease prevention. One factor identified as having a significant impact on PA, both positive and negative, is the built and natural environment. The local socioeconomic profile is known to influence the environment. Therefore, we investigated a secondary database to identify which environmental and socioeconomic characteristics are more relevant for promoting PA. This research consisted of applying a principal component analysis (PCA) to a database containing variables describing the local socioeconomic profile and the characteristics of the natural and built environments. The results showed that environmental variables were more significant than the socioeconomic profile in this case because they exhibited higher eigenvector contributions to the main PCA axis. Finally, we observed that not all environmental variables exhibit a proportional increase with income. We believe that these findings are of great methodological importance for environmental and physical activity studies.
