Technological advances and urbanization have increased the consumption of products, resulting in more waste being disposed of in landfills, posing a risk of air, soil and water pollution, as well as altering landscapes and land use. The generation of leachate is one of the main negative consequences of landfills. This study evaluates the suitability of the MODUELO 4.0 computer model for estimating leachate production from landfills in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, Brazil, using local hydrological, morphological and climatic data. Various scenarios were simulated with different conditions for filling and covering the landfill, using natural soils from the region. Statistical analyses showed that, despite the variability in the model's performance, there was a significant increase in the accuracy of the simulations over time, especially in the months with observed data The study concludes that, although there are limitations in the information available, MODUELO 4.0 proves to be a useful tool for managing landfills in the Brazilian semi-arid region. However, the model still has significant limitations when it comes to providing accurate estimates of leachate flow that can help with decision-making and compliance with environmental regulations.
